Comic-Con began in 1970 as a small gathering of comics fans in downtown San Diego. It is still run by a nonprofit and now fills the San Diego Convention Center each July, with crowds spilling into the Gaslamp Quarter next door. Badges for the four-day show are known to sell out long before the doors open.
